World War I has ended and Italian soldiers, broken but victorious, are returning home. As the agitated village prepares for their first free elections, Padre Pio – who is ready to begin his ministry- struggles with his own personal demons without knowing what awaits him: the stigmata of Christ will appear on his palms for the first time.
