Reporting on the demolition of Croatia’s oldest prison, journalist Lucija Car uncovers a graveyard for the unclaimed bodies of the inmates. When it turns out the grave of a former secret service assassin is empty, she enlists the help of ex-prison guard Martin Strugar to help build on the mysterious story of Vukovšćak prison.

When Lucija and Martin turn to the case of Irena Lolić, a young inmate who died on the women’s wing of the prison, they begin to unravel an unsettling story of misfortune and dysfunction. Meanwhile, when the news reaches him that his empty grave has been discovered, Zdenko Jurković begins his own hunt for Lucija.

While Lucija and Martin uncover the sad love story of Predrag Bogojević, a Serb caught up in an illicit love affair with the wife of a powerful Croat during the Croatian War of Independence, the assassin Zdenko Jurković, long thought dead, arrives in Zagreb.

On her birthday, Lucija’s party is overshadowed by a new threat. Despite her fears, Lucija decides to keep the threat secret from everyone except Martin, a risk that could cost her dearly as hitman Zdenko gets increasingly closer…

Lucija’s suspension is lifted, on the condition that she ceases her investigation into the prison graveyard. But Lucija ignores her editor Zdeslav, and instead turns to the historical case of Marko Glavina, a young politically active man who was imprisoned for anti-state activity. A bungled bureaucratic system meant he was never released, and Lucija wants to discover why.

Lucija and Martin trace the prison suicide of Bernad Dukić, a businessman who had been involved in large-scale fraud in the 90s. However, as they dig deeper into Dukić’s past, the pair begin to suspect there were stronger forces at play in the crimes of Dukić.

At risk because of Lucija’s investigation, her mother and brother leave the city. As Zdenko continues to pursue the police-protected Lucija, the pair turn to the case of womaniser and street con-artist, Pero Jakiša.

In 1999, Danijel Dragun was brutally murdered in Vukovšćak. He was involved in the stealing of money to purchase weapons for the Croatian Army, and it turns out Zdenko Jurković was too. It's now a race against time for Lucija to close in on Zdenko before he gets to her first.

Having barely escaped an attempt on her life, the tenacious Lucija continues in her investigation. When she uncovers the conflict at the heart of her next case - Bekim Halilaj, an Albanian pastry-maker who killed a young skinhead in Vukovšćak - she chances upon another discovery that reveals just what Martin has been hiding.

Ignoring the new string of threats she receives, Lucija looks into the case of a man’s suicide in Vukovšćak. Investigating the prison suicide, Lucija is confronted with a shocking discovery that will transform her life and force her to quit her investigations into Vukovšćak.

Lucija starts to destroy the prison documentation she has collected, but comes across a new surprise that prompts her to revisit the investigation. However, as she does so, she faces some difficult truths concerning her later father’s involvement with the prison.

Emotionally devastated, Lucija is on the verge of giving up. However, when she visits Martin in the hospital, he urges her to delve one last time into the story of the final remaining grave, the grave that contains the sins that Martin has himself tried to bury…
