President Kennedy sets an ambitious deadline for a successful moon landing, and NASA is rocked by the Apollo 1 disaster. But NASA recovers, overhauling its designs and methods to achieve a successful manned launch with Apollo 7. Then in December 1968, Apollo 8 takes off aboard the mighty Saturn V rocket - the largest and most powerful rocket the world has ever seen.

It's 1969, and NASA is poised to go for a moon landing. But first, it needs to test the world's first true 'spacecraft', the Lunar Module, and identify the risks posed by the moon's unexpected 'mascons'. The lunar landing itself is a mission which will test the skills of crew-members Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins to the limit.

With questions hanging over the future of the Apollo Program and government funding slashed, NASA focuses on scientific research on the moon's surface. But the final phase of the Program is best remembered for the near-disaster of Apollo 13, in which the lives of the crew are saved by their own brilliant ingenuity, with some help from Mission Control.
