Campania, 1950s, a farmer's son is forced to witness the murder of a man. Years later, that child, now a man, finds himself in prison for murder. Nicknamed The Professor, he soon comes into conflict with the Camorra boss 'O Malacarne and his struggle to rise to power begins.

Both in and out of prison, 'O Professor has more and more "loyalists," one of whom, as soon as he receives his freedom, clashes with 'O Malacarne. Meanwhile, the police begin to investigate his affairs, but The Professor, thanks to his instincts and intelligence, manages to get everyone on his side, or almost...

The war between clans has begun, and The Professor feels the need to control his affairs in person. Commissioner Iervolino understands that the Police do not have enough resources to stop the Camorra, but he still manages to stop one of The Professor's "loyalists," who is now forced to choose between the life and death of his boss.

The Professor returns to prison and, convinced that he has been betrayed by his most trusted man, makes an impulsive choice. Iervolino proceeds with his investigations and through them succeeds in getting The Professor transferred. Just then an earthquake shakes Campania, but the reformed camorra boss's thoughts turn to the unrest of some young terrorists: the Red Brigades.

The Professor tries to agree with Commissioner Iervolino on the Red Brigades, but the Police are not the only ones interested in the case. Some mistaken deals made by The Professor lead him to waver and doubt his power, but not his own blood. The fight is now between him and the State, and when everything seems to be going wrong, a strange visit shuffles the cards...
