Weaver, Kovac, and the other doctors work frantically to try to save Jerry and a pregnant Abby, who were both critically injured during the shootout that left the ER in shambles. Meanwhile, Sam tries to escape from her ex-boyfriend and his criminal accomplices as they head north, but things quickly turn violent.

Abby's overbearing mother arrives at the hospital to comfort her and Dr. Kovac as their son's life lies in peril; Sam fears she will be arrested; Tony Gates makes a risky decision with an overdosed teen; Neela gets drunk.

Pratt assumes his new role as attending but must deal with the new interns; Gates' patient is an older man with congestive heart failure, whose partner fights with the man's family to keep him alive.

Gates is stuck in a complicated living situation; Abby and Kovac consider hiring help as they juggle work and the new baby; Neela is disappointed when Dr. Crenshaw assigns menial jobs instead of surgical procedures.

Abby prepares to return to work; Kovac tries to recall his treatment of stroke patient Curtis Ames as he prepares for court.

Dr. Kovac fears for the worst as he awaits the jury's decision between himself and Curtis Ames; Ray gets jealous when he sees Neela and Gates flirting.

Abby and Kovac hire a nanny to care for their son; Morris and Sam treat a belligerent patient who seemingly has the flu, but he refuses treatment when they discover his condition is more complicated.

Abby and Kovac argue about a diagnosis when a woman comes to the ER with signs of spousal abuse; Gates, Abby and Neela must quickly determine a child's ailment when a group of confused homeless kids enters the ER.

Abby responds to a bus crash; Neela accepts an invitation from Gates; Pratt confides in Dr. Weaver about his brother.

Pratt has a tough time coming to terms with the discovery of his brother's sexual orientation. Outside his apartment, Kovac spots Ames (recurring guest star FOREST WHITAKER), but Kovac chooses not to tell Abby. Gates begs Neela to give him a chance. And Kovac and Gates treat a young girl who appears to have been assaulted.

With the holiday spirit in full effect, romances heat up the emergency room. Meanwhile, after a homeless boy convinces Gates and Ray to help his friend, who is in critical condition, Gates breaks his promise and calls children's services. Ames issues a restraining order against Kovac. And Dubenko gives Neela the opportunity to be part of a very special holiday miracle.

Pratt and Hope question whether they are responsible when a patient dies after being prescribed the wrong medication; Meg comes to County General and angrily confronts Gates and Neela about their relationship.

Kovac is jealous when Abby pays a lot of attention to a patient; Meg pulls a stunt when Gates moves out of the apartment; the authorities want to arrest Pratt after one of his patients dies.

Gates and Neela try to revive Meg after they find her unconscious in her car; Sam thinks she knows who set fire to her home; tensions mount as Ames gets more desperate for revenge.

Abby and Sam treat an obnoxious aspiring comic who has mysterious symptoms; Pratt finds himself in trouble as he is questioned about the death of a patient; Neela scrubs in on a kidney-donor surgery.

When a woman comes into the emergency room with acute liver failure, Gates and Kovac are faced with a moral dilemma. Neela also ponders right and wrong when a patient offers to donate a kidney to a complete stranger. Meanwhile, Ray fights to investigate the accidental fall of a squad of cheerleaders.

Family members have frostbite after being stuck in the snow; Neela is jealous when Dr. Dubenko brings in a new surgical intern; Gates deals with the reappearance of his father.

A photographer comes into the ER with a terminally ill patient; a new surgical intern, who appears to be Dr. Dubenko's new favorite, upstages Neela.

Kovac and Gates must deal with the frightened father of a young man with heart failure; a man risks his own life to be a good Samaritan; Pratt tries to make up with his brother.

In a busy emergency room, Kovac feels the pressure to take care of the overflow of cases before the area is shut down for renovations. A lonely Sam befriends terminally ill photojournalist Diana Moore, who has a negative outlook. Pratt gets a scare when his brother unexpectedly shows up in the emergency room. And the tension between Gates and his father, Mike, reaches a boiling point.

Arriving for the department dinner, the staff learns that surprise nuptials are about to take place; Ray cannot handle seeing Neela and Gates together.

Kovac and Abby acclimate to their new roles as husband and wife; Hope and Morris enjoy the honeymoon suite; Pratt hopes to win over a new woman; a new doctor in the ER means business.

The new chief, Moretti, makes some major changes in the emergency room. Meanwhile, Kovac puts his honeymoon on hold when he must travel back to Croatia to be with his ailing father. Gates is urgently called home when Sarah panics that she might be taken away. And after a patient convinces her to attend an antiwar rally, Neela finds her life in peril.
