The March sisters face up to the prospect of a bleak Christmas.

Jo meets Laurie and learns of his troubles.

Mrs. March goes to the hospital to nurse her husband.

Jo resents Meg's engagement to John Brooke, as it means breaking up the family.

Jo is asked to write her first novel while Meg and John have their first quarrel.

To avoid the persistently amorous Laurie, Jo takes a job as a Governess in New York and meets Professor Bhaer.

Laurie is heartbroken that Jo can never return his love and goes to Europe with his grandfather, where he meets Amy.

Tragedy strikes the family and Laurie goes to France to be comforted by Amy.
