One Sunday, Kazuho asks Renge to help her plant some saplings in the garden. Renge is excited and calls the other students from the branch school to help. When Kazuho teases Renge by telling her the saplings they're planting are bell peppers, Renge tries to get out of helping, but Kazuho brings her back by admitting it was a joke. Natsumi and Komari confess that they aren't fans of bell peppers...

It's summer, and Natsumi is lounging at home when the doorbell rings. The visitor is Miyauchi Hikage, who's returned home from Tokyo for summer break. Hikage says she wants to play something that'll give her a chance to move around a lot since she just got off the Shinkansen, and Natsumi is eager to join in. She declares that she came up with a new finishing move, the Surefire Kill Shot, while...

When Renge receives a bike from her grandma, she's eager to practice so she can ride everywhere with her friends. But the rainy season is in full swing, so she sets about making a teru-teru bouzu in hopes that the rain will stop. Meanwhile, Renge is on duty to take care of the tadpole shrimp she caught while playing in a field, and she grows very fond of them.

Komari is going crazy as Natsumi forces her to dress up as a robot for her summer research project. Hotaru also plans to work on her own project today, since she's at home alone for the day. Her project combines a talking robot with a walking robot. She uses her dad's computer to input the lines her robot will say and places the necessary mechanisms for both robots in one of her Koma-plushies,...

Near the end of summer break, Renge goes on a camping trip with everyone from school. After setting up the tents, they all find their own ways to have fun, from tossing a ball to fishing. In the evening, they have a barbecue. The kids can't resist eating too much of the delicious grilled meat and vegetables, and their teacher, Kazuho, has too much alcohol and gets drunk. Hotaru is finally getting used to how kids play in the country, although she's still afraid to jump off the bridge into the river. Hotaru returns home from playing to find a letter from her friend in Tokyo, with a photo of her old friends at an amusement park, making her feel nostalgic. Meanwhile, Hikage is home for a visit and shows off pictures of Tokyo Tower to Renge.

The second semester has begun, and the Asahigaoka students are making wood crafts in class. Renge and Natsumi pair up to make something together, but can't come up with any ideas. Just when Natsumi starts to panic, Renge demonstrates her unique sensibilities again. Then at lunchtime, the smell of curry fills the air, and the Koshigaya sisters recall a tragedy that befell the school long ago...

Natsumi asks Komari if she wants to come along on a trip to the department store, but Komari isn't in the mood. Natsumi tells her that ghosts will come out if she stays home alone, but Komari insists that ghosts aren't real and that they wouldn't come out during the day anyway. Komari later gets hungry while staying at home alone, so she goes to the kitchen for a snack, but then she suddenly...

It's New Year's Day, and Renge is admiring the kadomatsu decoration in front of her house. She checks the mailbox and finds New Year's cards inside from everyone at Asahigaoka Branch School, but she seems a bit disappointed for some reason. Then, when she takes the cards inside to show her family, she sees her sister Hikage frantically begging Kazuho for a New Year's allowance...

As Kaede is watching her store, she sees Renge pass by outside on her way to play with Shiori. Later, when Shiori is energetically running around, Renge warns her to keep an eye on what's around her and walk carefully. But then Shiori notices something and takes off running. It turns out she's spotted a praying mantis's egg sac, so she asks Renge if she can give it to her soon-to-be baby sister...
