In Salazar’s Portugal, Annie is disgusted by her father’s work at PIDE and frustrated by her mother’s futility. Then her husband, a Swiss diplomat, is assigned to Havana, Cuba, changing everything.

Annie and Raymond land in Cuba. Annie is dazzled by the Havana lifestyle and the Cuban revolution. Then the “Missile Crisis” begins, and Annie and Raymond disagree about politics. Worse, Che gives Annie a compliment that makes her blush.

Annie is in love with Che Guevara, and Raymond is increasingly jealous. Meanwhile, in Portugal, “Operation Autumn” goes wrong and what would have been the General’s capture turns out to be his assassination.

Raymond awaits Annie at the Havana airport with a bouquet for their fifth anniversary, but she has disappeared. Months later, she resurfaces, having claimed political asylum in Cuba. Ashamed, her father offers to resign but Salazar refuses.

Annie, now a Cuban citizen and revolutionary, starts work at the Tricontinental Conference as a translator. Her parents are destroyed, but nothing they do will bring her back to Portugal. Then, the Portuguese revolution occurs.

Silva is sent to prison and Nita is released. Annie comes to Portugal, to work alongside the revolutionary armed forces, and does everything she can to intercede for her father. She reconnects with her mother, then returns to Cuba.
