When an old friend and colleague apparently commits suicide, Virgil Tibbs travels to Philadelphia and uncovers corruption within the police force. Back in Sparta, Althea is close to giving birth, and Bubba is recruited to help with her Lamaze class.

Chief Gillespie travels to Philadelphia to help Virgil Tibbs, who was mistakenly arrested for the murder of a police officer who was helping him in his investigation. Together, Tibbs and Gillespie join forces to clear the name of Dwight Walker.
