Weekends with Yankee

Amy Traverso travels to Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, for the annual Patriots’ Day festivities, including a reenactment of the Battle of Lexington, where the American Revolution began. Richard Wiese is in Rockland, Maine, for the Great Schooner Race, where he joins captain Becky Sigwright aboard the windjammer Lewis R. French.

Richard Wiese visits Golden Dog Farm in Vermont, where the owners’ motto, “happiness is golden,” applies to everything from their wine and syrup to their pack of golden retrievers. Amy Traverso experiences the lavender harvest at Pumpkin Blossom Farm in New Hampshire, making lavender wreaths and sampling flower-infused treats.

Amy Traverso visits Rhode Island’s Castle Hill Inn to experience its famous clambake and then tours Newport’s iconic harbor. At Sweet Berry Farm, Amy arranges flowers picked fresh from the fields. Richard Wiese explores autumn in Stowe, Vermont, from the Lodge at Spruce Peak, taking in peak fall foliage on horseback and fly fishing on the Lamoille River.

Richard Wiese meets the scientists at Cape Cod’s Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to learn about the deep-sea research submersible, Alvin. He also joins the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage on a clean-up mission of Cape ponds. Amy Traverso meets up with chef Michael Serpa to explore the clam shacks of Massachusetts’s North Shore by bike.

Amy Traverso heads to The Alna Store in Maine to meet the people who transformed this former gas station into a destination restaurant. Later, Amy checks into a Maine houseboat rental and cooks a cozy soup. Richard Wiese joins vegan chef Chrissy Tracey in Connecticut to forage for produce and cook with their finds at the Madison Beach Hotel.

Richard Wiese is in New Hampshire to learn about the historic Omni Mount Washington Resort and its many fall activities, from zipline canopy tours to golfing. Amy Traverso heads to Maine, where she learns how to row a dory on Belfast Bay, then visits the hottest addition to Belfast’s Main Street, Dos Gatos Gastropub, for tequila drinks and tacos.

Amy Traverso travels to the Mashpee Wampanoag tribal lands on Cape Cod to meet chef Sherry Pocknett, the first Indigenous woman to win a James Beard Award. They enjoy a tasty squash soup in the tribe’s wetu. Richard Wiese takes a bike tour along the New Hampshire Seacoast, and Yankee editor Ian Aldrich visits the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Vermont.

Richard Wiese takes a Mid-Coast Maine road trip in a camper van and enjoys some kayaking, cooking and hiking along the way. On a perfect fall day, Amy Traverso visits the orchards at Gould Hill Farm in New Hampshire. With the owners, Amy makes a classic apple crisp and cider doughnuts and tastes some of the hard ciders produced at the farm.
