A young man is murdered, and Hedda is put in charge of the investigation while waiting for reinforcements. The special investigators arrive and make it clear that they do not want Hedda's help.

Dreyer suspects that they may have overlooked some details at the crime scene and orders an excavation. Many skeletons are found in what turns out to be a mass grave.

The discovery of the mysterious mass grave leads Hedda to learn that her mother was one of the victims. She suspects that her father knows more than he is saying.

Dreyer understands that Hedda has come a long way in her own investigation, and realizes that he needs her help. They resume their work together.

Hedda and Dreyer continue their investigation, finding clues that lead them to a mysterious pre-Christian religion that was once prevalent in the area.

Hedda is hailed as a hero after saving Jani and solving the 30-year-old murders, but is still plagued by guilt.

Hedda and Dreyer are excluded from the investigation, but decide to continue on their own. After going through the evidence, they find an important clue that puts Mildred in a new light.
