A suicidal man kills several people when he causes a catastrophic train crash. Sam struggles to cope after a young victim dies in his arms, forcing new DI Wes Leyton and Ronnie to keep a close eye on him. Jake isn't happy when Henry introduces him to Alesha's replacement, but before he can protest, shocking news raises a few questions. Unfortunately for Ronnie, he thinks he has the answers.

As they investigate the death of the suicidal man, Sam is suspended, putting him on a dangerous path of self-destruction. Faced with the sudden loss of so many lives, Ronnie reaches out to his estranged daughter. Meanwhile, Jake gets to know his new sidekick, the feisty Kate Barker. Wes and Ronnie discover the true identity of the culprit, but will they catch him in time?

A man is found dead in a hotel room, and the money he was carrying has gone missing. Ronnie and Sam discover that the man owes his ex-wife thousands in child support for their dying son. The boy's grandfather is the only suspect when he admits that he did shoot the deadbeat dad in self-defense. It seems the case is closed, until Kate discovers that an all-too-shocking truth is yet to be unearthed.

The body of a wealthy woman is pulled from the river. After ruling out suicide, Ronnie and Sam focus their inquiries on the victim's abusive ex-husband. However, the investigation turns closer to home when the detectives discover that the daughter was infatuated with her stepdad. Ronnie follows his gut in a bid to draw out the real killer and reveals a sinister plan was afoot.

Following the suspicious death of an old woman, Ronnie and Sam are led to believe that her caregiver was to blame. The caregiver, however, accuses the old woman's doting granddaughter of starving her in order to benefit from her death. Jake vehemently prosecutes the granddaughter but is taken aback when she reveals the strength of her faith.

An adoptive, homosexual father is found beaten to death, and his two-year-old son is missing. The clock is ticking for Sam and Ronnie as they go in search of the boy, and they turn to the ex-drug addict mother for information. Kate is appalled when fingers start pointing at the mother, too, but she soon discovers the truth when she unlocks the door to her past.
