Newspaper editor Pete Phillips is visited by a mysterious German woman seeking information on a man whose photo was featured in his paper a week previously. Saber is visited by Mrs Peters, who believes her husband to have disappeared. But Mr Peters is alive and well - and effectively kept prisoner by a dubious art shop owner who makes his money selling forgeries of old masters. Sam Hawtrey suffers damage to his legs following a fall down a hotel staircase. He sues the hotel for a large sum but their insurance company believes Hawtrey to be faking his illness. Accountant William Pelham falls to his death from an office window. The police believe he may have killed himself, but a suicide clause in his life insurance policy means no payout. Antiques dealer Harold Jason turns down a fantastic offer on an Italian casket at four times its worth as the item has been reserved. Kim Muller arrives from America to begin her new employment with Mr Harding, a famous lecturer. She finds the house deserted and Harding dead at his desk - but, by the time she summons police to help, the body has vanished. Martin Haigh looks on in horror as the airliner carrying his wife crashes, killing everyone on board barring the pilot.
