On June 28, 1914, a Serbian student in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo shot the Austro-Hungarian heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife. The echo of those shots reverberated across Europe. Just a few weeks later, the French, English, Belgians, Russians, Serbs, Austrians, Italians, and Germans had mobilized their armies.
