Zoo Juniors

Zookeeper Angelika has her hands full with two leopard species from Asia and a puma from North America. It is just as busy in the giraffe house with a newborn male calf and Evita the anteater is giving her keepers a tricky time while they try to feed her.

In the wild, some animals are rejected at birth but here in Berlin, any Zoo Junior abandoned by its parents always has a favorite keeper to rely on, like Sina the capuchin who is meeting her family for the first time.

Today's animals come mainly from South American. Troublemaking capybara piglets in the Zoo's pond and llamas and alpacas promenading in the Park for the visitors.

Often, the zookeepers have to help animals that have been rejected at birth. Round the clock bottle feeds help a rare Chakoan peccary as well as twin goats. In the Children's Zoo, a Shetland pony gives birth for the first time.

It's busy day in Berlin. With one giraffe giving birth in the outdoor enclosure, there's another going for his first walk in the paddock. In the Big Cat house, three bearcats kittens are weighed, while rare Chinese leopard twins meet mom.

Today in Berlin, while one Asian elephant celebrates her birthday, another has an urgent visit from the dentist and there's a surprise arrival all the way from South America.

Many species are on the endangered list in the wild but here in Berlin, their captive cousins keep the gene pool alive. New Zoo Juniors are arriving all the time, from Javan leopard cub Pelangi, to the black rhinos' latest calves and Opala's tiny baby.

There are thousands of animals kept at Berlin's two zoos. Okapis from central Africa celebrating a birthday, to Australian emus enjoying their first day outdoors. The Madagascan lemurs have a new baby but they're not letting anyone get close.

From the heat of the deserts to the freezing cold of the Himalayas, our Juniors are learning how to fit in at the Zoo. The snow leopard twins get their final inocculations and their names, the Bactrian camel calf has his first trip outside and a young coati kit climbs his first tree.

From the Sahara desert to open grasslands, today's Zoo Juniors come from Africa. The queen mole rat is giving birth to a brood, the spring hares have had a successful season and young giraffe, Bine, is refusing to go to bed.
