From spectacular shots of lava pouring out of one of the world's most active volcanoes to soaring explorations of lush, unspoiled valleys to reef-skimming underwater forays with sea turtles and dolphins, OVER HAWAI'I presents an illuminating, off-the-beaten-path tour of Hawai'i's six major islands: Hawai'i, Maui, Lana'i, Moloka'i, O'ahu and Kaua'i. While such popular visitor destinations as Waikiki Beach and Lahaina make appearances in the special, much of OVER HAWAI'I was shot in and above areas that can be accessed only by helicopter-or the extremely adventurous hiker. As a result, viewers are treated to a wealth of rare views that reveal the remarkable diversity of America's 50th state. The program takes viewers not only over but under, dipping below the surface of Hawai'i's waters to visit coral reefs teeming with sea life. OVER HAWAI'I celebrates both the scenic beauty of Hawai'i and its cultural heritage, telling the islands' stories from an authentically Hawaiian point of view. Rather than using a single, offscreen narrator, the production features commentary by several people who call Hawai'i home. Viewers meet residents including park rangers, a cultural specialist, a storyteller, a marine biologist, a surfer and an environmentalist.
