Love In A Time Of HIV

Tender Mavundla is a big hearted singer from Soweto, and one of the stars of the popular series 'South African Idols'. But her dream was smashed when, she revealed her HIV status and was swiftly voted off the show.

We travel to St. Petersburg where Dennis and Volodya, 25, are keen to start families with their wives. The two men are HIV negative, but their wives are positive and in Russia that's a huge obstacle - it is illegal in Russia to assist HIV positive women in their conception.

In New York City, 16 year old Christina Rodriguez is just like any other teenager. She hangs out with friends, she's thinking about dating and she's working on her future at college. But Christina was born HIV positive, to a positive mother. Today, against the odds, both mother and daughter are still alive and thriving against the odds.

In Mumbai we meet Shakshi Sawant, a young widow who was infected with HIV by her husband. She works for one of India's first marriage bureaus for positive people, a dating agency that aims to overcome the old stigmas and help those with HIV to find love and happiness once again.

Having children is all part of a happy relationship and certainly what Andrew and Michelle want. But Andrew is HIV positive and the risks to both mother and baby make a traditional conception too great a risk. But new research may mean that the couple can fulfil their dreams.
