Nestling at the foot of Canigou in a narrow valley, Villefranche is a fortified village of 230 inhabitants listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once both French and Spanish, it retains a strong Catalan identity. Above, Vauban reinforced medieval defenses with a fortress. The village is also known for its pink marble, used on many facades and worked by generations of stonecutters.
