When violence breaks out between Russian fur hunters and the indigenous people on a remote island off California's coast, Karana flees her home with the rest of her Native American tribe. Realizing her younger brother has been left behind, she jumps ship and swims back to the island, where the two attempt to survive alone against staggering odds.
