Henry's creeping dissatisfaction with life on the throne is brought into sharp focus when he visits a halfway house in Manchester for recovering crack addicts. Back at the palace, a chance meeting with royal florist Serena further affects Henry's mood, leading to a snap decision and a dramatic announcement.

As events escalate, Henry (wrongly) thinks he's managed to go off the grid for a clandestine meeting with Serena outside the palace. Meanwhile, with news of the possible abdication leaked to the press, suspicion wreaks havoc on previously rock-solid relationships within the royal household.

Prince Alastair returns from abroad and is initially receptive to the idea of taking over the throne. However, with Henry's outraged younger brother, Edwin, on the warpath and a gay royal wedding apparently required before the accession can take place, will Henry ever achieve his dream of freedom and a normal life with Serena?
