Located in Avignon, Southern France, the Palace of the Popes is a historical symbol of the church's influence. The construction was started in 1335 and finished in less than twenty years, under the leadership of two builder popes, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI. It became one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe.
