Mahjong Legend Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into the Darkness

In the Midori mahjong parlor, Nangou is trying to pay off his debts by playing mahjong but unfortunately, he's losing badly. Just as the situation turns sour, a stranger wanders in on their game. After sharing a few wise words, Nangou is able to survive. This marks the beginning of a legend that will shake the underworld.

After winning his first hand of mahjong, Akagi continues playing against Ryuzaki and his gang members. As he is playing, he realizes his full talent and potential at mahjong. Akagi quickly turns the tide in his favor and takes the lead, so Ryuzaki calls in his last resort, rep player Yagi.

The silent battle of tiles continues between Akagi and Yagi and and their desire to win is higher than ever. Yagi resorts to cheating, using something called the "caterpillar" in order to take advantage of Akagi's weakness. Akagi learns knows this is a trap and decides to counter them.

After Akagi won his first game of Mahjong, Yasuoka has already set up a match for him. It's three days away but Akagi wants to play sooner. He is quickly called in ahead the rival gang he's supposed to challenge and they want to make a deal however during the meeting, Akagi meets a mysterious blind man who turns out to be more than a stranger.

The rematch between Akagi and the Kawada group has begun! With the stakes higher than ever, the Kawada group decides to play their secret weapon, the blind mahjong master who reveals himself to be Ichikawa, as Akagi's opponent. The only problem is that Akagi hasn't arrived, so Nangou is forced to stand in his place. Akagi makes it just in the nick of time but he has a lot of ground to cover i...

The match turns up the heat in a one vs. one "Tse Ii Men" between Akagi and Ichikawa! Ichiikawa's strategy begins to take play as Akagi starts to feel the pressure. However, just as Akagi reaches 5,000 points, he makes a surprising comeback. Nonetheless, with Ichikawa playing a defensive strategy, it seems like an endless match, resulting Akagi to employ more "dirty" methods...

After Akagi uses dirty tactics, this game of Mahjong has turned into a sudden death with only a few points remaining. Ichikawa will stop at nothing to win and Akagi will need more than luck tonight.

Six years after Akagi won against the Kawada group, Yasuoka has brought Akagi before them to show his skills. During their meeting, something different about this Akagi... is he fake? Ishikawa from the Kawada group uses the help of Nangou to find the real Akagi.

At the Kawada group's headquarters, the fake Akagi (Yukio Hirayama) and the real Akagi face each other in a battle of skill. The impostor Akagi shows the real Akagi just how skillful he is.

After winning the life savings of Kawashima and co. Akagi soon hears that they are out for revenge. Soon after, Akagi is suddenly called in to battle against his impersonator but right after seeing a match with the Fujisawa group rep player Urabe.

The mahjong match between Urabe and the fake Akagi has dragged on for so long that the wager is now at 32 million. The boss of the Kawada group now realizes that the fake Akagi is lacking something as a gambler and wants to switch him with the real Akagi instead. However Akagi will only play under one condition... let Osamu play first.

The match between Urabe and Akagi continues as Akagi is planning to finish this with a big hand.

Akagi leaves the table on a single wait. After anticipating his win, Urabe, is astonished by his bold statement. To everyone's surprise Urabe did deal into Akagi's hand and he won by "Hai Tei, Dora 4", but the Kawada boss calls him back later to find out how Akagi knew he would win.

After saving Akagi's life, Yasuoka and Ohgi want to put him up against a monster whose been causing the recent string of mysterious deaths, in a high stakes game. The "monster" that he will face is Iwao Washizu. After spending two weeks with the Inaba group, Akagi finally receives the call for the match worth 20 million but there seems to be some frightening house rules put in place.

The mahjong game between Iwao Washizu and Akagi is about to commence and with the dangerous house rules put in place, this could easily go south at any moment. However Akagi is not satisfied with the 20 million wager and requests that Iwao increases it, tenfold. But it will take a lot to convince Iwao.

The game of Washizu Mahjong has begun, where Akagi has wagered 2,000cc of his own blood and Iwao Washizu wagers his entire 500 million fortune. Akagi starts off by playing defensively in an attempt to gain easy points but he soon learns that this tactic won't work in Washizu Mahjong.

The Washizu Mahjong death match between Akagi and Iwao continues as Akagi has picks up with his "Tan Yao, Dora 1". Unless Akagi outranks Iawao, he is still in danger.

Patience brings opportunity as Iwao lets down his guard giving Akagi a chance to strike by calling a East, Red Dragon, 1-character and is looks to be in ten pai but will it be enough? Akagi goes into it without transfusing the 600cc of blood back into his body. What could he possibly be thinking?

Well into the second session, Akagi upsets Iwao and has a chance to transfuse his lost blood but yet again he refuses, focusing on Iwao's enormous fortune. Nonetheless, Akagi picks up the momentum and begins to dominate, but by the final round there's a single tile that proves to be a major obstacle.

The second session of Washizu Mahjong climaxes as Suzuki receives the decisive West tile. It's clear to everyone that Akagi will lose... except Akagi doesn't see it that way. Akagi eventually puts down his West tile and goes into ten pai. Despite this, Akagi knows Iwao still has many opportunities to take him down.

The second session is over with Akagi's victory. Due the prior conditions, Iwao has a chance to back out of the match but will he take it?

The third session has begun after Iwao Washizu chose to continue; Akagi has lost a considerable amount of blood and Iwao has lost an equal amount of his fortune. Yet again, luck is on Akagi's side, as he constantly gets favorable hands... but this may not last long because Iwao seems to have natural born luck.

The third session of Washizu Mahjong continues as Akagi seems to be losing a considerable amount of blood with Iwao Washizu being close to a Tsumo hane man win. But even in the face of death, Akagi doesn't even flinch.

Washizu Mahjong continues well into its third session and Iwao Washizu is overflowing with luck, so much that its allowed him to achieve the almost impossible Dora 12. It's almost as if something evil is possessing Iwao, yet Akagi still doesn't flinch in the face of death and gets a chance to make his comeback.
