Carol Sanders' world has come crashing down when her 12-year-old daughter is beaten and raped by the local school's janitor. Despite his past criminal record, the man's hotshot lawyer-Ellen Wells-is able to use legal loopholes to get him acquitted. In a moment of blind rage, Carol shoots the man dead and is now on trial for his murder. Despite their tensions, Carol hires Ellen to defend her.
