In Ghent 1914, Belgian father Philippe struggles to accept that the German army will invade, even as discontent mounts and soldiers are mobilized.

Guillaume’s attempt to avoid military conscription fails as the Germans advance, and the news Antwerp will fall creates a rift in Flemish spirits.

While Phillipe curries favor and hosts German officers, Guillaume must act resourcefully in a deserter’s prison and Vincent has to fight to survive.

Guillaume is released, and Christmas brings a seasonal relief from the war, but living under German rule proves tricky for the family.

The German advance has been slowed and Vincent is delighted when his brother is enlisted. In Ghent, Marie joins the resistance.

Vincent is tired of the senseless bloodshed at the Yser. Guillaume is in charge of officer entertainment. Life in Ghent becomes increasingly complex.

Vincent takes a teaching job in the army and Guillaume gets an English girlfriend. Meanwhile Marie is on the run, and Phillipe is branded a traitor.

Things turn sour for Guillaume and Vincent in the field, as well as for Philippe, who is forced to resign his position at the university.

While love blossoms between Hans-Peter and Marie, hidden secrets come to light, and tragedy strikes the rest of the family.

With Vincent in prison for a heinous crime and Hans-Peter sent to the front, Marie struggles to help them both as the war draws to a close.
