Dr. Fanshawe (Mark Letheren, Stage Beauty, Delicious), a historian and archaeologist, is hired by Squire Richards (Pip Torrens, Price and Prejudice, The Crown) to inspect a catalog of artifacts. When he finds that his binoculars are broken in his luggage, he must use a pair from the Squire. Through the new pair, Fanshawe makes an unsettling discovery by the monastery and decides to investigate.

After ignoring that the room numbers mysteriously jump from 12 to 14, he is awoken suddenly by sounds in the night that lead him directly to room 13. He has no choice but to open the door.
