LBJ: Triumph And Tragedy

Lyndon B. Johnson embarks on an ambitious agenda after becoming president following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. But his successes come with a huge political cost, as he might have delivered the South to the Republican Party for decades to come.

Lyndon Johnson debuts his domestic program, "The Great Society," which he's determined to pursue while he has the power to do so. He must balance his domestic agenda with the growing conflict in Vietnam.

Racing against the clock, Johnson pushes through the most productive legislative session in history, but he can't outrun the deepening conflict in Vietnam. As the anti-war movement grows, Johnson fears Vietnam will overshadow his domestic accomplishments.

Johnson surprises the nation by announcing he won't run for another term as president, choosing instead to focus on bringing and end to the war. After retirement, he settles into a slower pace at his ranch, but continues to be haunted by Vietnam.
