A child was killed in broad daylight in an apartment in a Moscow high-rise building. The criminal took only 60 rubles and left a black glove behind. The victim's father disappeared, and a few days later a brutal double murder was committed in the Moscow region. There are already five victims of this criminal, and his motivation is still unclear. Cherkasov is trying to find logic in the actions of the perpetrator, but so far he has nothing but a sketched portrait of the suspect.

The police arrest the alleged killer. But Cherkasov doubts his guilt and forensic examination confirms his doubts. The killer is at large, and his motivation is still unclear. Cherkasov focuses on the search for the missing father of the murdered boy, who visited his apartment at night and took out a mysterious package...

After the murder of the boy's father, a suspect who was released by Cherkasov is included in the all-Union wanted list. The major himself is removed from the post of a chief investigator of the case and made a subordinate to his colleague. But this does not stop Cherkasov - he continues to develop his own version and the suspect does not fit it in any way...

Natasha conducts her own investigation and gets close to finding out the identity of the culprit. But the killer does not sleep either - sensing danger, he acts immediately. Stas, shocked by the latest events, confesses to the murders. But Cherkasov doubts his guilt.

Cherkasov tries to look after Slavik's mother. The murder of the director of the theatre removes the suspicions from imprisoned Stas. Finally, the name of the maniac becomes known, but it will not be easy to catch him - he lays low. At the same time, Slavik, the only person who has seen the maniac, disappears. Cherkasov promises to return the boy to his mother.

The police tightens the ring around the killer. But the maniac holds a boy hostage, so Cherkasov acts cautiously and cunningly. In addition, the criminal is a master of conspiracy, and on New Year's Eve he will probably try to take advantage of the fun going on everywhere and escape the city...
