After a car accident in which his son Roberto remains miraculously unharmed, Don Francesco Aliprandi makes a vow to the Virgin Mary and abandons the guapperia, leaving the field open to his rival Don Pasquale Roncilio. A few years later, without asking his father for advice, Roberto falls in love with the starlet Ninfadora, and starts working as an accountant for Don Roncilio.
