The Forsytes

Chance encounters for cousins Jolyon and Soames Forsyte, rival heirs to the family firm, set off a chain of events which threaten the stability of their lives and the reputation of their family. Married Jolyon reconnects with a former lover whilst eligible bachelor Soames falls for a penniless dancer. Each is faced with an impossible dilemma: do your duty or follow your heart.

Jolyon and Soames remain at loggerheads in business. Jolyon discovers he's the father of 10-year-old illegitimate twins and Soames's father James plots to use Jolyon's secret to discredit him. Jolyon's stepdaughter June thwarts her mother's marriage plans by falling for a penniless architect whilst Soames, smitten by Irene, makes a hasty marriage proposal to avoid losing her.

Jolyon Senior plots to bribe Louisa to renounce any claim on Jolyon whilst James tries to have Jolyon expelled from the company. June, unable to forgive her stepfather, seeks solace with architect Philip. Jolyon insists on recognizing his obligations to his children. Soames, besotted by Irene, promises her a move to Paris, support for her dancing career, and the two are married.

Jolyon promises he's cut ties with Louisa. While Soames and Irene honeymoon in Paris, Jolyon Senior wants to implement the succession. James is furious after Soames plans to set up a branch of Forsyte & Co. in Paris. But Soames, horrified by the ballet, resolves to return to London. Frances' efforts to secure June an aristocratic marriage are dashed when she gets engaged to Phil.

Disaster strikes a goldmine at Forsyte & Co., causing various client's financial ruin. Irene's hopes of a Parisian life are shattered when Soames reveals James' heart condition. June learns of Louisa's imminent eviction and relays her suspicions as to the perpetrator to Jolyon, who arranges a cottage for her to live. Jolyon declines Frances' demand to cut Louisa from his life.
