The Third Reich in Color

From 1937, color films also document life in Hitler's Germany. Eva Braun and Hitler's pilot Hans Baur are among the first amateur filmmakers to expose the new celluloid. This creates unique images of the dictator's public appearances and his private life on Obersalzberg. Scanned in high-resolution HD, the footage of Hitler and his entourage unfolds a particularly realistic effect.

During the war with the Soviet Union, 35mm color footage was used for Nazi propaganda. Hitler's pilot filmed his visit to the front lines. Meanwhile, Hollywood director John Ford captured stunning color scenes in North Africa. A camera crew, sent by President Roosevelt, recorded the 1943 Casablanca Conference, where the Allies demanded the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.

In 1944, in southern England, Allied troops are getting ready to land in Normandy. US soldier Jack Lieb is there with his amateur camera. On D-Day, John Ford shoots in color with his camera crews. His Hollywood colleague George Stevens also lands in northern France with his team on 6 June 1944. The men document the advance and finally the liberation of Paris up close.
