James and Lena hire a groomer, and things go sideways when he makes a surprising choice about who to hire. Meanwhile, when an older woman must give up her dog, James is called to the rescue, but it turns out to be a rescue unlike any he has ever done.

James and Lena train their new groomer to hilarious effects before he heads out to rescue a dog left in a junkyard owned by his mafia buddy, Fat George. Meanwhile, James gets a call about their new rescue Buddy, and the pair are changed forever.

James and Lena want an animal sanctuary, so they go upstate to find property in what will become the longest trip of their lives. On the way, they rescue a dog that has been tied to a tree for days and get into a little car accident.

James gets called to a rescue something he's never faced before: a Peking duck! Meanwhile, Lena prepares for her mother's surprise party and needs James to help, but he is busy facing his past as one of his first rescues is being abandoned ... again.

The cat's out the bag when a feral cat rescue runs James ragged searching for two missing kittens, and Lena gets him to build a cat coop in the garden. Then, a trip to the vet leaves James with a huge dilemma, and he faces his past at a school reunion.

It’s cat season, and that means lots of rescue kitties. Dr. Pernice gives James a chance to adopt out some of his rescues at a fair, but while Lena manages to make headway with the kittens, James ends up gaining more dogs than when he started.

James has to make a life-or-death decision about his top dog, things aren't going well with the new groomer and James gets a rescue first. It's also his birthday! Between Lena's surprise and the boys' gift, it's an emotional roller coaster for James.

Lena comes up with a brilliant plan to raise money for the sanctuary: a best dressed dog contest! Like most things where James is involved, however, the best laid plans don't always come out quite like they are supposed to.

Someone who adopted a dog from James breaks a cardinal rule, and he must dip back into his past to make things right. Then, James has three days to move all the rescues out of his place, and it's a race against time to find a home for all the animals.

James and Lena finally find a place for all their rescues, but it ends up being a little too late for one of their flock. Then, the pair pull out all the stops to celebrate their first step towards their dream of an animal sanctuary.
