Brutalized and abandoned, the body of a young bus conductress turns up in the Oxford countryside, right on Morse’s doorstep. Despite his suspension from duty, the detective launches his own covert investigation into the woman’s death.

An artist perishes in an unexplained house fire, and a young housewife dies from the same mysterious “tummy bug” that has depleted the ranks of the Oxford City Police. Morse’s investigations lead him to an inner-city supermarket owned by a wealthy family named Richardson, who are to undergo a surprising tragedy of their own.

The disappearance of a Dutch au pair draws Morse into the world of the eminent Mortmaigne family. When a link seems to emerge to a similar cold case, police professionalism and officer loyalties are put to the test. Meanwhile, the body count begins to rise.

Morse gets recruited by an old college mentor to track the movements of the man’s estranged younger wife. As matters develop between the detective and the wife, a grisly murder is immediately pinned on a local crime family. Morse has his doubts, not just about the killing but about his future as a police officer.
