Richard Goddard lives alone with his neurotic son in a house filled with rivalry and resentment. The men's relationship is so destructive that they decide to publish a newspaper ad titled "Woman Wanted" to find a woman to take care of household chores and also to bring a breath of fresh air with her. Emma applies for the role and immediately finds herself entangled in a creepy love triangle.
