At the Midnight Bell pub in 1930s Soho, barman Bob dreams of a better life.

Having lost the courage to meet Bob, the barman from the Midnight Bell pub, Jenny goes back to walking the streets. She picks up a man who seems oddly familiar, and later recognizes him as having played a part in her fall from respectability.

Sharing lodgings with fellow barman Bob is a kind of sweet torment for Ella, who is pursued by pub regular Ernest Eccles, a boorish and slightly sinister older man who can offer her financial stability. Should she marry him, or should she hold on to the hope that Bob will one day come to love her?
