John Halder (Viggo Mortensen), a professor of literature in 1930s Germany, writes a novel in which he defends euthanasia in the context of his family. Years later, a high official of Hitler's regime contacts him to write a similar story for the Nazi party. The acceptance of this assignment will gradually lead John to betray his own identity.
