Chise Hatori, 15 anni, giapponese. Sola e senza una famiglia, la ragazza viene acquistata all'asta da un eccentrico mago dalle sembianze animalesche. L’antico essere la conduce nella sua casa, con l’intenzione di fare di lei la propria discepola… e la propria sposa.

In pochi sanno che dietro la faccia della libreria che Elias è solito frequentare, si nasconde in realtà il laboratorio di Angelica, vecchia conoscenza dell’uomo ed esperta di Magus Craft. Recatisi lì per acquistare gli strumenti necessari per iniziare l’apprendistato come maga, su invito della donna Chise prova a usare la magia, ma le cose non vanno esattamente come sperato…

Mentre Chise ed Elias si trovano in Islanda per portare a termine uno degli incarichi che sono stati affidati loro da Simon, la ragazza viene da rapita da un uomo misterioso a cavallo di un drago, che la porta con sé nel paese dei draghi.

Chise ed Elias si recano a Ulthar, la patria dei gatti, per svolgere il secondo incarico affidato loro dalla Chiesa. Chise ascolta il racconto del Re dei Gatti delle tristi vicende avvenute secoli prima in quelle terre, ignara che un personaggio sospetto la sta seguendo…

Renfred cattura Chise prima che questa possa eseguire l’incantesimo di purificazione sul Grumo. Lo stregone, che vede la ragazza come una povera creatura ingannata dalle fate, le rivela il triste destino che attende tutte le Sleigh Beggy.

Purificato il Grumo, Elias riporta a casa Chise, caduta in un sonno profondo. Mentre la ragazza si trova nella foresta per recuperare le forze, giunge da Tír na nÓg Titania, la Regina delle Fate.

Risvegliata dal suo sonno, Chise inizia a studiare la magia. Mandati dalla Chiesa a indagare sull'apparizione di un Black Dog, Chise ed Elias si trovano di fronte a un macabro spettacolo. Mentre Elias indaga su quanto accaduto, Chise si trova di fronte uno strano ragazzo dai capelli neri come la notte e gli occhi rossi come il fuoco. L’attacco a sorpresa di Cartaphilus, scatena l’ira di Elias, che assume la sua vera e mostruosa forma. Mentre è priva di sensi, Chise vede in sogno il passato del Black Dog.

Due settimane dopo la conclusione dell’ultimo incarico affidato loro dalla Chiesa, Elias continua a rimanere chiuso nelle sue stanze. Mentre si trova fuori casa con Ruth, Chise incontra Angelica, venuta a trovarla per assicurarsi che stia bene.

Chise and Selkie climb aboard a dragon's back to meet Lindel, to have her own mage's staff made. Frustrated by Chise's acceptance of her being kept as a pet by Elias, he describes the time he found Elias in the darkness. Meanwhile, Elias, who had stayed at home by himself, receives a letter from a sorcerer's college.

Lindel finishes the staff that Chise had finished carving. As she finishes, she meets an old friend, who offers her some wise advice.

Chise is attacked by yukimushi, briefly making her dangerously ill. She and Elias discuss the nature of their relationship.

The Leannán Sídhe begs Chise for her help: Joel is on his death bed, and she can only seem to make things worse. Chise vows to do what she can to turn that around.

A surge of magic threatens to kill Chise. Elias takes her to the land of fairies for treatment, while Silky is left to take care of their home.

Christmas is coming up. Alice invites Chise out to London, where they hang out together and go gift shopping for Renfred and Elias.

Two siblings, Stella and Ethan, get in a fight. They wish for things that they don’t entirely mean, but come to regret dearly, as they become true.

Having made friends with Chise, Stella visits the Ainsworths’ home. Meanwhile, Elias’ behavior takes a troubling turn.

In a dream, Chise converses with Cartaphilus. It seems that he’s found a solution to his problem – one that involves Chise.

Chise falls victim to a dragon’s curse after she attempts to free it as it’s being sold at an auction. She may not have very long left.

Elias and Chise attend a meeting of witches to try to enlist their help. Elias, desperate to help Chise, makes some questionable decisions.

Having captured Chise, Cartaphilus begins grafting parts of her onto himself. He forces her to relive some of her worst memories.

Elias earns the help of many, and they form a search party for Chise. Meanwhile, Chise and Cartaphilus relive his past together.

Cartaphilus and Chise argue over their respective approaches to dealing with their own suffering, beating each other up brutally in the process.
