Meanwhile, DI Pat North is chosen for a new Home Office scheme to fast-track talented detectives. To Walker's annoyance, she is placed on the re-investigation of the Meadows case along with her best friend Vivien. His career is flagging and North's success highlights his inadequacies and their differences. North, concerned about appearing biased, refuses to discuss the case with Walker and tempers fray.
