Below the Surface

Upon her return home to Copenhagen from Syria, June is taken hostage by Islamic terrorists--several of whom are presumed to be foreign Syrian fighters who fought for ISIS. Philip, on leave from the TTF, decides to investigate.

Philip’s pursuit leads to a ferry in the Oresund Strait. June escapes the hostage-takers and hides on board, and Philip convinces the ferry’s captain to activate the terror alarm. TTF is activated, but this time without Philip to lead it.

The hostage-takers have hijacked the ferry, taking the passengers and crew hostage. With the ship motionless in the Oresund Strait, the TTF tries to get an overview of the situation from their position at Krongborg Castle.

With Philip trapped in the ferry’s freezer, the hostage-takers use harsh methods to get hold of June’s cell phone. On land, investigators are trying to learn more about the hostage-takers while the TTF prepares for a surprise assault.

The failed assault by the TTF and SWAT on the ferry has resulted in casualties and makes Rami determined to carry out the fatwa against June, but Yusuf stops him. Only direct orders from their mysterious leader can change the plans.

A video showing the brutal execution of June and Philip circulates online to considerable grief for their families and colleagues in the TTF. The leader of the hostage-takers, a Russian diplomat and agent, is on the trail of June’s cell.

News that Philip and June are alive rekindles hope in the TTF. With the hostage exchange set to happen in the airport where a plane is waiting for the hostage-takers, Philip races to release the hostages from the booby-trapped container.

With the surviving hostages rescued from the ferry, June escapes and takes Rami hostage. Philip tries to negotiate with her, but she refuses and will only surrender on one condition: the video from her cell phone has to be made public.
