Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961) was UN Secretary-General from 1953 until his death in an unexplained plane crash. He created the first "blue helmet force" on the occasion of the Suez crisis in 1956. He was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his peace work in the style of "soft diplomacy" in the Middle East conflict and in the Congo.
