Renee rules Le Palais de la Mediterranee with an iron fist, but the establishment is in trouble. Despite the relentless onslaught from her arch-enemy Jean-Dominique, determined to buy the business, Renee puts her trust in a young lawyer.

When Renee refuses to appoint Maurice as the CEO, he vows revenge. He seduces Agnes, whom he knows is in love with him, then urges her to sell her casino shares to her mother's sworn enemy.

No one has seen Agnes for four months. Alerted by Renee, the police find a strange note in Agnes' apartment, suggesting suicide. Her mother refuses to believe it, and an ensuing investigation reveals Maurice's disordered personality.

Years later, the case is cold but Renee continues her lonely quest for the truth. Maurice is imprisoned for financial irregularities, but there is still insufficient evidence to link him to Agnes--until an unlikely witness comes forward.
