Professor Robert Langdon's friend and mentor, Peter Solomon, director of the Smithsonian, has been kidnapped. At the demand of Peter's abductor, Mal'akh, to save his missing friend Langdon must to go on an esoteric journey to find an ancient portal.

Langdon and Katherine encounter Peter's Freemason friend Bellamy who agrees to help them in their hunt for the capstone.

Sato confesses to Bellamy that she was Zach's CIA handler. Bellamy tells her the story of a rogue Leviathan Group member who accessed the ancient wisdom 100 years ago and learned how to affect matter with his mind.

After recovering the capstone, Langdon is rescued by Nuñez at Wiggington Quarry. Katherine receives what she believes to be a psychic message from her father, giving her proof of life, as well as much needed motivation to fight on.

Langdon uses an inscription on the stone box that enclosed the capstone to lead the team to an engraving at the National Art Gallery, but is still unable to find a map to the portal. Mal'akh sends Langdon video evidence that Peter is still alive.

After being captured by Mal'akh, Langdon is finally reunited with his mentor, Peter. Katherine tracks down Mal'akh's lair by watching Peter's hostage tape again and again.

While in CIA custody, Sato interrogates Mal'akh to find out how he evolved from Zachary Solomon to the monster he is today. In flashback, Zach learns his father won't be coming to his rescue, allowing him to fall under the spell of mystic Samyaza.

Still reeling after learning that Mal'akh is actually Zachary, Langdon and Katherine rush to warn her mother Isabel. But they're shocked to find out that not only did she already know, she's been his mysterious benefactor all along.

Katherine, Langdon and Peter decide the only way to beat Mal'akh is to continue solving the clues so they can release the wisdom to the public. They work on a plan to outsmart the CIA with a newly healed Sato.

As Mal'akh's plan enters the final phase, Peter and Langdon wrestle over the sacrifice needed to save Katherine, and Nuñez and Sato race to understand the weapon known as Cascade.
