Two train porters take different paths after a tragedy on the job, as Zeke vows to fight for better working conditions and Junior looks to expand his bootlegging operation in Chicago.

Junior runs afoul of a Chicago gangster, Zeke tries to win over a strong union ally, Lucy vies for the attention of a visiting musician, and Marlene makes an unlikely friend.

Junior attempts to settle his debt with Queenie, Zeke suspects his unionization efforts are being undermined by a mole, and Marlene pushes for a Black-owned community clinic.

Zeke and Marlene visit New York to pursue their respective agendas, Lucy's headlining debut at Club Stardust does not go as planned, and Junior gets a glimpse of Queenie's ruthless nature.

Zeke uses his welfare committee position to get closer to Edwards, Marlene strikes a deal with Fay to get the clinic up and running, and Queenie shows Junior what life is like in her world.
