Brothers Laust and Peter work on their local estate, living in poor but happy circumstances, and are both in love with the estate manager’s daughter.

Bishop Monrad stirs public opinion: Schleswig is to be annexed into Denmark, even though it may lead to war. The brothers report for duty in the army.

The brothers meet their comrades in arms and learn about the horrors of war. They both correspond with Inge, but Laust also sends her secret letters.

The brothers reach Dannevirke and meet an acquaintance. The battle proves incredibly difficult, and the General independently decides to withdraw.

The Prussian troops are ordered to hunt down the Danish troops, and catch up with Peter’s division, while Laust is caught in a fierce snowstorm.

In Copenhagen the reality of the situation is beginning to sink in. Inge enrolls as a nurse at the camp hospital in the hope to see Peter and Laust.

Despite the number of casualties, Copenhagen maintains that the army must persevere. Didrich reveals to Peter that Laust and Inge harbor a secret.

Denmark is in a state of shock as the army has been destroyed. Lives have been shattered, but some still have faith. Who will rebuild Denmark now?
