In the Season 2 premiere, Cathy seeks a second opinion, causing a strain on her relationship with Dr. Todd; Sean learns about his sister's cancer; Adam sees a therapist against his will.

Frustrated at not being able to land a spot in the clinical trial, Cathy resorts to supernatural aid; Sean becomes assertive around the house; Adam capitalizes on his classmates' sympathy about his mother's illness.

Cathy and Paul realize they need to set patient-caregiver limits; Rebecca is put off by the newly medicated Sean; Adam is attracted to a new girl, Emily.

With her clinical trial about to get underway, Cathy (Laura Linney) is beset by one problem after another. And as he prepares for Halloween, Sean (John B. Hickey) worries that his house is being haunted by its late owner, Marlene.

Worried about finances after Paul's layoff, Cathy decides to pawn her jewelry but runs into Lee and has a surprising day with him; Adam gets into a compromising situation; Sean is ostracized by moms at a local park over his homemade baby sling.

Adam's shocking indiscretion threatens Cathy's new job as a swim coach; sparks fly between Andrea and a Ukrainian coworker that Paul is mentoring; Sean seeks advice on taking the "next step" with Rebecca.

After learning that her blood pressure is elevated, Cathy (Laura Linney) turns to her new "cancer friend," Lee (guest star Hugh Dancy), for advice. While Paul (Oliver Platt) feels skeptical about the nature of Lee's relationship with Cathy, Andrea (Gabourey Sidibe) and Myk (guest star Boyd Holbrook) have a very nervous first date.

Cathy hosts Thanksgiving dinner at her house but when a secret she's been hiding is revealed, the event takes a disastrous wrong turn; with insurance costs mounting, Paul considers a different means of generating income.

Rebecca deals with the grief over her miscarriage in an unexpected way which leads Cathy to reconnect with old friends; Andrea's relationship with Myk heats up; Adam meets a girl he's been chatting with in an online cancer support group.

As Cathy (Laura Linney) looks to patch things up with Lee (guest star Hugh Dancy) in the wake of their falling out over Thanksgiving dinner, Sean (John B. Hickey) struggles to cope with the loss of his girlfriend and their unborn child. Meanwhile, Adam (Gabriel Basso) discovers an unsettling truth when he joins Poppy (guest star Parker Posey) at her high school reunion.

Cathy makes a big decision regarding her family after a fight with Lee and a dinner with Dr. Sherman; Adam goes looking for his missing uncle; Andrea makes an impulsive choice.

On the eve of a family vacation in Italy, Cathy (Laura Linney) rushes to be with her dying friend Lee (guest star Hugh Dancy). And as Cathy is forced to confront some hard choices between her friend and her family, the discovery of Myk’s illegal activities exposes the real reason behind his plans to marry Andrea (Gabourey Sidibe).

In the Season 2 finale, Cathy is inspired by Lee's passing to ring in the New Year in an unexpected way; Paul tries a new tactic with the insurance agency; Adam makes a surprising connection with Dr. Todd.
