Amos Gitai’s impassioned feminist polemic selected for the 1999 Cannes Film Festival is set in an ultra-Orthodox enclave of Jerusalem and follows a pious woman who is rejected by her community when her marriage proves childless. Meanwhile, her beloved sister is in love with a young man who has fled the community to lead a secular life.
