When the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia engaged the Union Army at Gettysburg, an area known as "the Wheatfield" became the focus of intense conflict.

In 1864, General Grant doggedly pursued Lee's forces and met at Cold Harbor.

On July 21, 1861, the first major battle of the Civil War was fought. 35,000 Northerners marched to Manassas, Virginia to challenge more than 20,000 Southerners.

On December 13, 1862, Union General Ambrose Burnside mounted a massive, yet futile frontal assault on Robert E. Lee's Confederate troops outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

In May 1863, in the wilderness of Virginia, the Union Army under newly appointed General Joseph Hooker launched a massive assault on the Confederates.

On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the fighting climaxed on a rocky hillside known as Little Round Top. Heroes and legends were born out of the bloody battle.

It was one of the most crucial engagements of the Civil War--a brutal series of attacks and counterattacks during the epic Battle of Gettysburg.

In September 1863, along the Chickamauga River in northern Georgia, the Union and Confederate Armies battled to the death.

During the epic siege at Petersburg, Virginia, the Union forces hatched a daring plan. They dug directly beneath the Rebel forces and exploded four tons of black powder, creating a massive crater!

On November 30, 1864, Union General John M. Schofield's weary army retreated to a farm in Franklin, Tennessee.
