In the 1850s midwest, low-life drifter George Briggs is rescued from certain death by pious homesteader Mary Bee Cuddy. In return, Briggs must join Cuddy on a perilous mission to escort three women to a safe haven in Iowa. Travelling by covered wagon across the desert, the unlikely pair's journey is marked by constant danger from bandits, Indians and other threats roaming the lawless country.
