He directed the defense operations in the midst of an enemy barrage of mortar shells, falling grenades, and extremely heavy gunfire. Major Crandall flew 22 missions during the Battle of la Drang, supplying ammunition and evacuating the wounded. Taylor moved forward on foot to rescue wounded men from burning vehicles and personally removed all the crewmen to the safety of a nearby dike. Sgt. Maj. Brady flew over 2,000 combat missions and evacuated more than 5000 wounded during his two tours of duty in South Vietnam. He continued to man his machine-gun and help other injured soldiers. SSG Dix led groups of local fighters in rescuing endangered civilians and driving Viet Cong forces out of buildings in the city. The next morning, he rescued 3 soldiers previously cut off from company. Sgt. Patterson singlehandedly destroyed by rifle and grenade f5 enemy bunkers, 8 enemy soldiers and captured 7 weapons. S/Sgt. Howard rescued his wounded leader and many others while he repulsed enemy attacks. He also assisted in moving wounded personnel to safety. CWO Novosel piloted/completed 15 hazardous extractions, leading to the rescue of 29 men. Sp4c.
