The last light of the day, after the sunset, creates warm rich colors and reveals the waves as they gently make their way towards the beach. The landscape is a silhouette and reveals the rocky shore and the palm trees that identify the coastal city of Laguna Beach, CA.

One of the cutest animals on Earth is the koala. They spend most of their time eating and sleeping in the eucalyptus trees in their native Australia. With their big black noses and their big round eyes they remind us of our connection to the animal kingdom. For artists, there may be no better subject matter than the koala.

"Monet once said that all truth is revealed by looking at something long enough," Wyland says. "It's a beautiful thought that applies to everyone, not just artists. Sunsets are always too short for me. So in this painting, I wanted to freeze the moment of the sun descending at the end of a wonderful day and simply linger upon it."

Explore the rugged coastal landscape of the Na Pali coast on the northwest side of the island of Kauai. "The Na Pali Coast is a very special place for me," Wyland says. "Waterfalls and streams shape the valleys, while the sea carves the cliffs. With so much color and so many contrasts, it's an artist's dream."

For the last two decades, Wyland has expanded his efforts for healthy oceans by raising awareness about the importance of protecting watersheds upstream. "We all live downstream from someone else," Wyland says. "I spent part of my youth living in Denver against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

In "Green Flash with Whale Tail" Wyland captures a joyous moment as a humpback whale begins its descent into the depths of the warm Hawaiian tropical waters against the backdrop of the rare optical phenomena known as the Green Flash.

Wyland imagines the sight of one of these sirens of folklore making her way toward the light as she surveys the vast expanse of her underwater kingdom. "I think we can all identifying with the sense of yearning of the young mermaid in this painting," Wyland says. Is it a quest for adventure? Is it for love lost? The answer is entirely up to the viewer.

One of Wyland's favorite themes is the migration of the green sea turtle. These ancient creatures migrate long distances between feed grounds and hatching beaches. These animals face many challenges for survival and it is my hope that we can rise to the challenge to protect them for future generations to appreciate.

Wyland captures the pristine beauty of a waterfall amid a backdrop of lush tropical vegetation. "Usually waterfalls are formed when a river is young, but in the tropics, where rainfall is heavy, waterfalls can form at any time. Sometimes, I simply sit back and lose myself in the splendor of these magical places."

Coral reefs are known for their amazing color and diversity of life. For artist Wyland, these diverse underwater ecosystems provide endless fascination. "I consider coral reefs living miracles," Wyland says.
