The Tatra Mountains

Between Poland and Slovakia lies a wilderness virtually unique in Europe: the Tatra Mountains. One of the oldest forests in Europe grows on the mountain slopes. It's home to the greatest predators of our climes, animals that are long extinct elsewhere. Nowhere else in central Europe do so many bears live so close together as here. But what is it that makes this environment so attractive to them?

The Tatra Mountains loom far above the clouds - the smallest high mountain range on earth. Some species have thrived here since the ice age: chamois are well equipped for the harsh climate. Marmots spend more than half the year asleep. Red deer and bears repopulated the region after the end of the ice age. Since then, they've tried to master the various challenges of this mountainous world.
